HARDY Highlanders who took on a John O'Groats to Land's End cycle challenge for RNLI Invergordon are on their way home after battling atrocious conditions during an epic effort worthy of the Olympic Games.

Greg Drew and Norman Agnew saddled up at the far north outpost last Saturday with their sights set on a little more than the "standard" end-to-end challenge.

Their target is cycling John O'Groats to Land's End – and all the way back again – in 12 days.

The determined duo – who decided to take it on after their beloved Strathpuffer 24-hour event was cancelled earlier in the year because of Covid – are keen to pay back the kindness of the Invergordon lifeboat crew who provide support at the legendary Starthpeffer mountain bike event in addition to their voluntary role saving lives at sea.

They hit the halfway mark yesterday, pausing briefly for souvenir snaps before their minds turned to the return leg.

They made Land's End at 3.30pm yesterday an impressive five days and 10 hours after setting out from John O'Groats.

Their running total is well over £6000.

Their Two Wheel Ordeal started to live up to its name though with miserable weather and unforgiving winds. The Two Wheel Ordeal support team declared themselves "blown away by the effort, determination shown by the dynamic duo!!

On the first day of the homeward bound leg, the cyclists made better progress than their support team whose van was stuck in traffic much of the day as they edged towards Exeter.
