AN alert over a yacht suffering engine failure triggered the launch this afternoon of a Ross-shire lifeboat.

RNLI Kessock Lifeboat's crew got the nod from the UK Coastguard at 12.48pm after reports of a yacht hit by engine failure south-west of Chanonry Point on the Black Isle.

The Atlantic 85 swiftly arrived on the scene with an astern tow established to recover the 11-metre, 12-tonne vessel.

She was taken to the closest safe harbour, Inverness Marina.

The four people on board the yacht were "extremely competent" and all wearing life jackets and taking appropriate safety precautions on their voyage, the lifeboat team later reported.

It was a useful trip for two trainees aboard. One of them, Andrew Ford said: “I recently completed my training on towing and today was the first time I got to put those skills into practice which was really good.

"Thanks to the other crew for keeping me right.”
