THE Whatever the Weather Wednesday programme at Gairloch Museum has successfully secured a third year of funding from the Highland Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund and additional support from the Hugh Fraser Foundation.

Each Wednesday in term time the museum runs reminiscence sessions, a social lunch and board games.

Reminiscences are prompted through looking at objects in the museum collection, photos, music, poetry, crafts and foods. All the sessions are inclusive, accessible and dementia friendly and run on a drop-in basis.

Project coordinator, Sarah Wright, said: “The strength of the group is in its diversity. All are welcomed and accepted just as they are. We want everyone to have a place in which they feel comfortable and are able to enjoy time with friends old and new.

“The museum collection offers us a wealth of fascinating resources that bring back memories and week by week many stories are shared. We always listen, sometimes laugh and enjoy getting to know each other better.”

In the next year, plans are being made to extend the project to reach out to those who are unable to attend the group, through visits with loan boxes and the House of Memories app. Museum staff will also be offering to run sessions in local care homes.

One carer who comes regularly with her husband said: “This club has been a life saver for me. It has helped us both as we meet up with an interesting group of people and we look forward to attending.”

Gairloch Museum sits in the heart of the village, providing local employment, an engaging collection for all who want to learn more about the history of the area and a hub for cultural and heritage activities for the overall wellbeing and enjoyment of the community and visitors to the area.
