CHILDREN spearheading a Wester Ross environmental group which has had a major impact since launched have welcomed the warm response from local businesses to their latest initiative.

Ullapool Sea Savers, which raises awareness of the importance of protecting the marine environment and champions the life it supports, thanked local businesses who have got in touch offering to take a collection tin.

The group said: "We’ve actually had to order more! We will be dropping them off as soon as they arrive.

"Please do give USS a shout if you think you might have space for one.

"Many people don’t realise it, but USS doesn’t receive any core funding, so this type of income is absolutely vital in enabling us to do what we do and we really, really appreciate it!"

The group has won a string of awards for its efforts to date and had its work highlighted by Prince William in a TV documentary released around the globe.

Young people have organised litter picks – on beaches and in lay-bys – and helped clear tons of rubbish that is potentially damaging to the marine environment.

They've also taken on and won an apology from a visiting north-east fishing vessel skipper whose crew littered at sea and shared a locally caught batch of seafood they were able to purchase with local people during the lockdown period, helping to support fishermen in the process.
