Highland Council roads report for Friday, December 9

UP to four inches of snow have accumulated on higher ground in parts of Wester Ross against the backdrop of an ongoing Met Office weather warning for the Highlands.

Highland Council's morning roads report outlines some issues with snow and ice across the region.

A number of schools have been affected by the weather.

Poolewe Primary is closed due to bad weather. And school transport to Gairloch Primary and Gairloch High School has been cancelled, although both remain open to pupils and staff.

Highland Council road condition reports for Friday, December 9:

Ross and Cromarty (East)

There is a light covering of snow on Primary routes, with ice affecting secondary and other routes this morning. All routes being treated as according to policy.

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh

Temperatures are a little higher than forecast. There is coverage on all routes but more slush than snow on lower routes and four-inch accumulations on the higher routes on the West Coast. All routes being treated as according to policy.

Some reports of problems yesterday evening with a few cars off the road. No known other overnight issues.

Badenoch and Strathspey

There is ice and snow on all routes which are being treated according to policy.

Caithness

Main routes are wet with some sleet showers and some routes have cover of light slush. All routes being treated according to policy. No known overnight issues reported.

Inverness

On lower roads, there is a frozen dusting of snow and ice. On higher roads, there is 1" frozen snow cover. All routes being treated as according to policy.

Lochaber

There are very low temperatures with black ice in places on roads. All routes being treated as according to policy.

Nairn

There are frozen and icy roads on lower routes and snow on higher routes. All routes being treated as according to policy.

Skye and Raasay

There are localised icy patches on routes throughout area. All routes being treated as according to policy.

Sutherland

There is snow and ice on majority of routes with snow up to 4 inches on the higher ground. All routes being treated as according to policy. No known overnight issues reported.

The UK Met Office has a Yellow weather warning in place today through to noon on Sunday for snow and ice for much of the Highland region.

School closures

The school closures page on the Council’s website at: www.highland.gov.uk/schoolclosures is updated from 7am and cleared each evening by 6pm.
