Gavin Berkenheger has been selected by Highland Conservatives to stand in the Dingwall and Seaforth ward at the upcoming Highland Council election on May 5.

Mr Berkenheger, who is Muir of Ord born and bred and a former Dingwall Academy student, says he is speaking up for those who are dissatisfied with Highland Council and want a shake-up of the current management.

He said: “The main parties who run the council continue to fail our smaller communities. A lot of the problems I have heard on doorsteps are the result of an out-of-touch government which is why I believe power should be returned to the most local level possible.

“We want to see more opportunities for our young people not fewer due to ‘cut backs’. We need a government that supports small businesses rather than hinder them. And if we want to address climate change we do so with realistic solutions not through vanity projects.

“Despite the backdrop of what’s happening in the world I have great optimism for the future if we all work together and identify what is truly important for our communities to grow and thrive.”

Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston is backing Mr Berkenheger’s campaign. He said: “As a local man, with extensive business and community experience, I know Gavin will be a fantastic councillor for people here.

“He understands the local issues and will work tirelessly to bring forward solutions to improve the way the council delivers services. He’ll be a great local champion and I’m looking forward to campaigning with him during the weeks leading up to the poll on May 5."
