GREEN-fingered Black Islers who missed out on an eagerly anticipated plant sale postponed last year because of the coronavirus crisis will get the chance for a good browse later this month.

The Black Isle Horticultural Society’s popular plant sale is set to return on Saturday, May 29 with a slightly tweaked format.

For gardeners it's is an opportunity to buy interesting plants raised locally by growers. These include some common ornamental and edible plants as well as some special herbaceous and alpine varieites, wild flowers, tomatoes, chilis for the greenhouse, unusual vegetables – like the perennial Daubenton’s kale, tree spinach, and oca – and terrariums for the house.

The fundraisier will be staged on the grass outside the Gordon Memorial Hall in Rosemarkie. To ensure it conforms to Scottish Government guidelines and is Covid-safe, it will run from 10am until 2pm with social distancing in place and hand sanitiser available.

BIHS secretary Graham Sullivan said: “We’re ensuring that the sale is run in a safe manner, and doesn’t become crowded. It will last longer than usual, there will be plenty of space, and we’ll be putting the plants out in stages throughout the sale, so there’s no need for everyone to rush at the start to try to get the best plants – whatever time you arrive, we expect to have a good selection available.”

You can find more details, including a list of some of the plants that will be available, on the society’s website http://www.spanglefish.com/blackislehorticulturalsociety/.
