Ross County Athletics Club athlete Lachlan Thomas successfully defended his title in the Inverness 5k as he won for the second year in a row.

The 15-year-old Invergordon Academy pupil stormed to victory in 15 minutes and 40 seconds, which is the fastest time in the event for more than 10 years.

His twin brother Kaeden was runner-up in 16:52 while Matthew Brennan from Moray Road Runners took third spot from the record field of 1300 in 17:04.

Thomas was 50 seconds faster than his winning Inverness 5k time in 2023.

Although he just missed out on his personal best time, he was delighted with the margin of his victory.

He says he is now looking to take that form into future races, with the London Mini Marathon one of his main aims.

Thomas said: “I’m very happy with my performance although it’s a few seconds outside my best time set in the Scottish championships last year.

"I’m now planning to compete in the Scottish under-17 road running championships at Greenock next week and my aim is to make the Scotland team for the London mini marathon for the second year in a row in April.”

In the women's 5k, Inverness Harriers athlete Katie Meek claimed the title for the first time in her career.

In the Inverness Half Marathon, Kirkhill athlete Mhairi Maclennan broke the women's record to become Scottish champion.

In the men's race, Inverclyde Athletics Club athlete John Bell claimed victory for the first time in his career.
