Kinlochshiel coach Johnston Gill has been rewarded for his side's historic 2021 after being named Mowi coach of the year.

Gill led 'Shiel to a first ever Camanachd Cup, before completing the set of senior shinty trophies by adding the MacTavish Cup to their collection too.

Coach of the season is the second award Kinlochshiel have won in as many weeks for last year's exploits, with Finlay MacRae already having been named player of the year.

On receiving the award, Gill said: "Certainly over the years, the team have evolved into being a very good team.

"Covid came in and has been quite bad to us, but last year Covid went away a wee bit and we got more training in which was good for us.

"We've won every trophy that's possible, including the Macaulay Cup twice, and we want to keep that going.

"Hopefully we can win a couple of trophies again. It has been very good for us, and gives the players that bit of impetus to carry on and be even better.

"The team, and the sport, and the directors, everybody deserves anything that comes my way because they're all part of the team."

Camanachd Association president Steven MacKenzie added: “I would like to offer my congratulations to Johnston for winning Mowi coach of the year.

"Kinlochshiel have been on an incredible journey over the past 10 years and there is no overstating Johnston’s importance in that.

"Winning the Camanachd Cup and MacTavish Cup will have only served to further his standing in 'Shiel folklore for years to come.”
