A WESTER Ross road improvement operation has resulted in delays after blasted rock "was displaced over a greater area than expected".

The rock blasting work on the A832 at Slattadale in Wester Ross had been scheduled for some point today between the hours of 10am and 4pm.

The blast site covers a long stretch of road measuring around 150m from the site of previous works during Phase 1, beginning at the end of Loch Bad an Sgalaig where the road narrows.

Highland Council had advised against using the road between those hours today.

It said it would try to communicate exact blasting times if possible through its social media channels.

In an update posted just before 7pm, it stated: "The blast works on A832 at Slattadale, just south of Gairloch, went ahead at 2pm.

"Unfortunately the rock was displaced over a greater area than expected. Work is ongoing to clear the road. Traffic should avoid this route if at all possible. Apologies for the inconvenience caused."

A number of people questioned why motorists using the road had not been informed of this development earlier.

One stated: "Poor communiction. You posted this at about 6.30pm. What about all the folk who were sitting in their cars from about 1.45pm waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Road closed for 30 minutes you said. Yes people know that things don't always go to plan, but no one thought to communicate with them – not even via social media let alone walking along the road and telling the drivers. On a hot day, no toilets, no drinks etc, waiting for four hours."
