Strong winds and rain are battering the Highlands – with gusts of 101mph recorded at Invergordon Life Boat Station earlier today (January 31).

According to weather forecasts page Highland & Islands Weather the wind speed exceeded by far the Met Office's forecast of around 85mph expected.

High gusts hit 89mph in Invergordon, 75mph at Smoo Cave in Sutherland and 75 at Beinn Tharsuinn Windfarm near Tain.

Ullapool Harbour also saw winds recording 68mph – with ferries between Ullapool and Stornoway cancelled for the day.

A yellow weather warning is in place and is expected to run until 7pm tonight, now covers all of Caithness and Sutherland, large swathes of Ross-shire, the Black Isle and and as far south as Inverness, Nairn, the Cairngorms and Speyside.

Due to the high winds drivers are advised caution along coastal routes and on bridges such as the Dornoch and Kessock bridge.
