BELLS rang out across Ross-shire in a poignant salute to the sacrifice of a previous generation and in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Ross and Cromarty Lord Lieutenant Joanie Whiteford paid tribute to the many people across the county who made last Friday's commemoration at 11.02am possible.

The ringing of bells could be heard in several communities immediately following a national two-minute silence led by the Prince of Wales.

Mrs Whiteford, who acts as the Queen's representative in the area, said: "Despite the restrictions of lockdown we achieved a county-wide bell-ringing. With the help of so many, those who checked the maintenance of bells, ringers, cameramen, communicators, facilitators and film editors we now have a record of some of the venues. Chuches taking part were from Tain to Portmahomack, Nigg, Fearn, Invergordon, Alness, Dingwall, Ferintosh, Arpfeelie, Black Isle, poolewe, Skye and Dornoch in Sutherland.

"And the list could have been a lot longer had we hatched the idea sooner.

"I hope the bells rung out near you and allowed you to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to allow us our freedom. I can only imagine the relief and joy in the country once the fighting was over and peace declared.

"Thank you so much to everyone for your help in making the socially isolated event in Ross and Cromarty happen."

Janet McDonald wrote: "Great idea and was lovely to hear." Fiona Scott said: "Heard the bells loud and clear!"
