Ullapool chippy 'rubbing shoulders with the elite' after national award win

An Ullapool chippy which has long been a favourite of locals, has now won a major national award for Best Fish Supper for North at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards.

Delicasea Fish and Chips on Ullapool's West Shore Street won the Best Fish Supper North category, covering the whole northern area of Scotland from Dundee upwards, and they were up against 13 other shortlisted chippies in the finals.

David and Mairi Mackenzie have been running the chippy for 16 years, and currently employ 13 members of staff locally.

David said: "Winning Best Fish Supper is like having the cherry on the icing on the cake and feels pretty incredible. Its pretty awesome to know just how appreciated we are by all our customers – It's them we have to thank.

"All the team here at Deli-ca-sea are very proud to have won this national award, and it shows the high standard that the team put in every day. Delicasea certainly wouldn't be what it is today with out them.

"This is our second award this year and this is the big one for Mairi and I, we find it amazing that our wee chippy now is rubbing shoulders with the elite of Scottish Chippies – It feels pretty amazing

"Offering the best product that we can has always been at the core of our vision when we took the chippy on, and to be recognised for that by you the customer is pretty bloody awesome."

Ullapool chipper lodges expansion plans

Recently, the Wester Ross chip shop has submitted a planning application for a new venture to turn the property next door to the Delicasea chippy into a hot takeaway with 20-seat indoor dining area.

David said: "Delicasea also currently includes the fish shop next door and the oyster and seafood sandwich bar. We are currently waiting on planning for a change of use for the fish shop. we are change to fish shop to a sit in fish and chip cafe."

The awards, held on November 13 in Glasgow, has its winners determined by public voting, followed by in-house judging at the awards.
