A FACE familiar to millions showed up in a small Wester Ross village this week and shared footage of himself enjoying one of the nation's favourite dishes.

Award-winning actor Richard E. Grant, who burst onto the scene as star of cult classic Withnail and I in 1987, has gone on to appear in a broad variety of films and TV dramas ranging from Jack and Sarah, Doctor Who to Star Wars, L.A. Story and Game of Thrones, becoming a national treasure along the way.

In a tweet shared on Friday, he holds up a freshly bought takeaway whilst on a boat and with a beaming smile says : "Fish and chips in Ullapool โ€“ living the dream, baby!"

The tweet shared on Friday afternoon has been viewed over 322,000 times and and received 7000-plus likes.

It was spotted by amongst others local MSP Maree Todd, who was brought up in the area. She replied: "Messing about in boats & a chipper โ€“ canโ€™t beat it. Welcome to Ullapool!"

She also flagged up a "cracking wee band in the Argyll tonight if you fancy?", sharing a poster for a gig there.

Many also added their own memories of time spent in Ullapool โ€“ and fish and chips.

The actor, recently featured in an episode of BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, has spoken movingly of his sense of loss following the death of his late wife, voice coach Joan Washington, who he married in 1986.

He wrote the memoir A Pocketful of Happiness based on his life with Joan and inspired by a challenge she laid down. She asked him to "try and find a pocketful of happiness in every single day" and he has since said: "That instruction has proved to be profoundly powerful. This book, honours that challenge."
