A Wester Ross woman has won a trophy for her cake’s tribute to the Kyle of Lochalsh Lifeboat and a much-loved RNLI trailblazer.

As a tribute to Pat Mucklow’s legacy, the Plockton and District Horticultural, Arts and Crafts Show introduced a new baking category this year – The Pat Mucklow Trophy, for the best RNLI-themed cake.

Pat Mucklow was a much-loved trailblazer for Kyle and Lochalsh Lifeboat, and passed away in June 2022 aged 86. Among her many achievements, in 2015 Pat received the RNLI’s Gold Medal for her services and fundraising efforts for, at that time, her 55 years of dedication to the charity.

Pat was the first woman in Scotland to get a Boatman’s licence, and in 1960 she was one of the first female crew members in the RNLI when she became part of the lifeboat crew in Mallaig, donning her oilskins and assisting hundreds of vessels over the years.

This year, Lola Dreghorn of Kyleakin scooped The Pat Mucklow Trophy with her cake celebrating 200 years of the RNLI.

Kyle RNLI congratulated Lola’s “amazing” cake on their Facebook page.

Lola Dreghorn commented under Kyle RNLI’s post, saying: “Thank you, I really enjoyed making this cake to mark the 200th year of the RNLI, and was a great pleasure to win the Pat Mucklow trophy.”
