Ross-shire's Instagram hashtag hits revealed as Eilean Donan Castle, Bealach na Ba and Ullapool thrust into social media spotlight in new survey

A CLUTCH of Ross-shire attractions have made a new list of top spots for outdoor with a famous castle again revealing its enduring appeal alongside a notorious mountain pass and picturesque villages.

An analysis of Instagram hashtags commissioned by luxury retailer House of Bruar looked at Scottish castles, murals, great trails, towns, villages, nature reserves, country estates, and hotels. Using hashtag data, House of Bruar was able to identify which countryside destinations were the most picturesque and highly visited in all of Scotland.

From a Ross-shire perspective, Eilean Donan Castle in Lochalsh is placed fourth in a ranking of Scotland's most scenic days out – ahead of is placed eighth in the most scenic destinations in the Highlands, well ahead of Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness with over 126,000 hashtags in the period analysed compared to the Inverness-shire attraction's 56,629 – enough to make tenth spot on the top ten list.

Edinburgh Castle, Loch Lomond and the West Highland Way take the top three spots.

Scotland's most beautiful castles to visit in the Highlands were: Eilean Donan Castle (98,480 hashtags), Urquhart Castle (56,629 hashtags), and Dunrobin Castle (23,560 hashtags).

In further good news for the Highlands, Inverness takes spot in the survey's in a ranking of Scotland's most scenic countryside destinations overall. Its 729,959 hashtags place it above St Andrews, Stirling,

Loch Ness itself makes sixth spot on that list with over 485,000 hashtags.

Other beautiful Highlands locations that appeared among the top 50 Scottish areas included: Ullapool in Wester Ross (56,330 hashtags) and the Bealach na Bà pass on the Applecross peninsula (11,584 hashtags).

Those looking for beautiful walking routes should head to The West Highland Way, which was by far Scotland's most Instagrammable Great Trail, and had over 135,700 hashtags recorded on Instagram. It was followed in popularity by the Fife Coastal Path, which had over 80,000 hashtags.
