A POWER cut affecting dozens of postcodes has hit communities in the Lochalsh area.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) reported an outage shortly before 12.45pm which affects locations stretching from Shiel bridge in the east, to parts of Kyle of Lochalsh in the west.

The outage appeared to be mostly centred around the northern and eastern shores of Loch Duich and Loch Alsh, and includes pockets of cuts that include Dornie and Balmacara.

It is unclear how many homes and businesses are affected, but SSEN said it hopes to restore power by 4pm.

"We're sorry for the loss of supply," SSEN said on its Powertrack website. "We currently have a fault.

"Our engineers are on site working hard to get the power back on as quickly as the can.

"If you need more information, please call us on 105 or send us a message on Facebook or Twitter (@ssencommunity) and quote reference 'NE7531'."

The outage comes as heavy snows have been hitting parts of the Highlands, and resulted in the closure of the A87 between Shiel Bridge and Invergarry.

It is not known if the outage is related to the icy conditions.
