AN award-winning Ullapool chippy has received approval for a planning application for a new hot food takeaway venture.

Deli-Ca-Sea fish and chip shop, run by DM Seafoods, applied for planning permission in November last year to change part of their West Shore Street premises from a fish shop and oyster bar into a hot food takeaway with seating.

According to DM Seafoods’ now approved application to Highland Council, the investment will bring multiple interior changes to the shop. The changes include the removal of a glazed window and the opening of a partition wall to create a wider entrance to a 20-seat dining area.

Cosmetic improvements will include the upgrading of kitchen and wash-up areas and the installation of a new partition and door.

As well as winning an esteemed award for Beach Fish, Deli-Ca-Sea also won the Best Fish Supper for North at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards in November last year.

David Mackenzie, who co-owns the chippy with his wife Mairi, also saw the business named as one of the best five chippies in Scotland in the Sunday Times.

Previously speaking on his award win, David said: “We’ve always worked on the foundation of quality and consistency in all aspects of our business, not just what you put out on the counter. The quality of the equipment, of the premises, it’s all in the mix. Everything we sell is also cooked to order, nothing is left lying around. The service is also really important.

“When we started it was just myself and Mairi, and a few part time staff. Now we’ve currently got thirteen members of staff, and we’re managing to keep them on all winter which will put money into the local economy.

“Building a reputation takes time, you have to be consistent.”
