A SNOWBOUND mountain pass is likely to stay closed for several more days, Highland Council has warned.

The Bealach na Ba was blocked on Tuesday of this week, after a wintry blast brought frequent heavy snow showers to Ross-shire.

The scenic road, which links the village at Applecross with Tornapress, is regularly hit by winter snows – forcing locals into a lengthy coastal road detour around the shores of Lochs Torridon and Shieldaig whenever it is blocked.

And with continuing strong winds, ice and snow on high terrain, Highland Council has now warned that the high pass will likely be closed right through the New Year holidays.

"Unfortunately, due to strong winds, snow and ice are still affecting the Bealach and with similar conditions forecast it will now likely remain closed until Tuesday," said a spokesman for the council. "Conditions will continue to be monitored."
