HEAVY snow sparked the closure of a high-altitude Wester Ross road this afternoon, police have announced.

Officers based in Ross-shire confirmed that the Bealach na Ba, linking the village on Applecross to Tornapress fell victim to the frequent snow showers which have hit the Highlands in recent days.

The road, officially known as the C1087 and part of the North Coast 500 route, features one of the highest climbs of any road in Scotland – rising from sea level to 626 metres high, and then back down to sea level in just 11 miles, coast to coast.

The closure comes as further yellow alerts for snow and ice were issued across the Highlands by Met Office forecasters on Tuesday.
