AN OAP who went missing while out trail biking on a popular east coast peak has been found, police have announced.

The alarm was raised after 77-year-old George McGowan failed to return home from trail biking on Ben Bhraggie, which rises above Golspie, yesterday lunchtime.

Mr McGowan, who is from the Golspie area, had been trail biking on his white Beta Alp 200 motorcycle at the time. The peak is home to a series of popular bike trails.

His disappearance sparked an overnight search involving police, coastguard, mountain rescuers and others.

Issuing an update this afternoon, police said they were now standing down the appeal after confirming that he had now been found "safe and well in the local area".

Chief Inspector Jamie Wilson said: "We are grateful to all of the public volunteers who helped with our enquiries, as well as our partners from Assynt Mountain Rescue Team, HM Coastguard, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and SARDA for their assistance with searches overnight and into today."
