A BUSY road junction in Ross-shire's county town has been described as a "minefield" by fed-up motorists concerned about damaging their vehicles and pedestrians flagging safety concerns.

Dingwall and Seaforth councillor Margaret Paterson – who herself lives nearby and is well aware of the issue – said she had been inundated with concerns from members of the public over the rutted junction at the bottom of Kinnairdie Brae where Tulloch Avenue meets Craig Road.

An exposed drainage cover on the section of road – which is awaiting the start of inlay work – has been of particular concern to drivers.

She said: "The whole section of road needs to be replaced. I can't remember the last time I had so many phone calls about something and people have also been stopping me in the street to ask about it.

"The drain like that is so dangerous and people are frightened to go near it because of their tyres."

She said she had received assurances from roads operations manager Ian Moncrieff that the work is programmed.

She said: "I'm told there have been difficulties getting a contractor but that it is in hand. I'm keen to let people know that we are aware.

"I'm fed up too as I live on Craig Road and have to try and dodge it too. It's not acceptable. It affects people going to Dingwall Academy, the leisure centre and the sawmill."

A Highland Council spokesman said: “Interim repairs are due to be carried out at the junction of Tulloch Avenue and Craig Road in Dingwall as soon as possible.

"A start date has yet to be confirmed with contractors for the permanent repairs to inlay works at Tulloch Avenue/Kinnairdie Brae in Dingwall.”

A number of roadworks were approved for the Dingwall and Seaforth area last month. That includes inlay works at Tulloch Avenue/Kinnairdie Brae; surface dressing works at the Heights of Docharty and Stoney Brae, Dingwall, and surface dressing at Windsor Place, Conon Bridge.
