AN Easter Ross community's bid to celebrate Earth Day with a feelgood event "was a bigger success than we could have imagined".

So says Evanton Community Trust (ECT) which teamed up with a number of local well-wishers and groups, amongst them Evanton Community Woods, for the Sunday afternoon event.

ECT community development officer Gabrielle Buist said there had been an encouragingly positive response from far afield to the environmental awareness-raiser.

She said: "It was a bigger success than we could have imagined.

"People flooded in as soon as doors opened and everyone said it was such a lovely event with interesting stalls, creative activities for kids and adults, beautiful plants and honey to buy as well a great home-made soup, scones and cakes to eat."

It was staged at the Jubilee Hall with foraging forays led by the woodland group under Adrian Clarke.

Ms Buist said: "It felt like the perfect combination and number of activities in the old hall, drawing on the expertise of our local partners such as the nearby community woods with foraging and a scavenger hunt, Averon Bees selling local honey, bay leaves and wild flower bombs, The Art Fidget with Tetra Pak printing and garden sharing, Friddy at Home with information on everything eco, Seeds of Scotland selling local varieties of tomatoes and other plants.

"Evanton Community Trust offered a practical workshop to get your hands dirty layering up some planters with all the ingredients needed to maximise nutrients and water retention naturally by imitating nature.

"People came from Tain, Muir of Ord, Inverness, Invergordon, Alness and Dingwall. One lady had researched Earth Day events and was delighted something was happening this side of Aberdeen.

"These kinds of environmental awareness-raising events are quite rare and people are willing to travel in order to participate, learn new things and get their kids engaged. It was another proud community moment where we all showed up and created an inspiring and fun day together. Thanks also to everyone who came from around the Highlands and shared their good company, ideas and experience."
