A WALKER who slid around 100 metres on one of Ross-shire's best-known mountain ranges triggered a lengthy rescue mission which resulted in an airlift to hospital.

The incident unfolded on An Cabar, one of the subsidiary summits of the Ben Wyvis massif, yesterday afternoon.

Around midday, members of the Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team were tasked by Police Scotland after a report of a hillwalker in difficulty.

The walker had slid some 100 metres before coming to rest on a steep snow slope, from which they were unable to move.

Team members, assisted by SARDA search dogs and Inverness Coastguard helicopter 151 started a search. However, weather conditions on Ben Wyvis meant that 151 was obliged to temporarily withdraw from the operation.

Later in the afternoon, the casualty was located by team members and assisted to safer terrain where they were placed on a stretcher and carried to lower altitude.

The helicopter was later able to evacuate the casualty to Raigmore Hospital.

Rescue team members were on scene until 03:30am.

Team leader Iain Nesbitt sai:d "This was a lengthy rescue which was carried out in challenging winter conditions and I'm pleased to say it had a successful outcome.

"Our thanks also go to the other agencies involved. HM Coastguard and Police Scotland."
