The Highland Council have issued their road reports for today, January 17 2024.

At 7am this morning for Ross and Cromarty, they reported that the combination of up to four inches of fresh snow, and sub-zero temperatures are causing difficult decisions. The council says that all routes are being treated, continuing throughout the day, with caution advised for any untreated surfaces.

At 7.45am this morning for Wester Ross, the council said that three to four inches of snow has fallen overnight, with sub-zero temperatures. They say that all routes are being treated, but extreme caution is still advised.

More than 100 schools –among which at least 72 nurseries – in the Highland Council area will not open their doorsto students today (January 17).

Many schools in the Highlands had already been closed earlier this week – prompting the postponement of highly-anticipated preliminary exams on Monday.

As well as this, the Met Office has recently upgraded their weather warning to amber after even heavier snowfalls have been forecast for parts of the Highlands.

The existing yellow alert, which covers the whole of the Highlands, was joined by an amber alert on Wednesday morning – ahead of forecasts for up to 20cm of additional snowfalls in some places.

The amber alert comes into force at 3pm on Wednesday and covers all of Caithness, Sutherland, as well as large swathes of Ross-shire.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) has also raised their alert status for Avalanche risks on Highland peaks to "considerable" yesterday amid concerns that even the weight of a single person is "likely to trigger" avalanches on steep slopes.
