‘Heartbreaking’: Tributes flood in following sudden death of popular Highland councillor Alasdair Rhind

Tributes have been flooding in from shocked members of the community after the sudden death of a popular Highland councillor overnight.

Alasdair Rhind, who was a ward councillor for Tain and Easter Ross and also the owner of a funeral directors in Tain, is understood to have passed away in Raigmore Hospital early this morning after taking ill suddenly on Wednesday.

Cllr Rhind’s sudden passing has left friends, family and the wider community in shock.

Local MP Jamie Stone, who also lives in Tain, was among those to pay tribute on Thursday, saying his passing was "a huge loss to us all".

And members of the public have aired similar sentiments in the hours since the news broke.

Numerous people have been commenting on the Ross-shire Journal's Facebook page, with many calling him kind, passionate, devoted and a "true community stalwart", and describing his surprise passing as "heartbreaking news".

Heather Wynne said: "Thoughts are with Mandy and the extended family at this time. Alasdair was a true gentleman, extremely passionate, devoted and hard working to every aspect of his involvement with groups, committees and the people of Tain - huge loss will be felt."

And Kate Goldie added: "Such a devastating loss to the community. My thoughts are very much with Mandy and family at this very difficult time. He was a kind, caring man who helped me so much through my difficult time."

"So sad to read this," said Graeme Bremner. "An amazing man who helped me and my family through difficult times. Thoughts with all his family."

"Such sad news, a true community stalwart!" said Mac Angus. "He did so much for our town and will be sorely missed."

And Fiona Nimmons said: "Absolutely heartbreaking to hear this. My thoughts go out to Mandy and all the family. Such a huge loss to the community he was a true gentleman with a heart of gold."
