The shock death of a popular Highland councillor has left friends and colleagues stunned.

Cllr Alasdair Rhind, who hailed from Tain and was one of the ward councillors for Tain and Easter Ross, is understood to have passed away suddenly overnight.

Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP Jamie Stone, who also comes from Tain, was one of the first to pay tribute to Cllr Rhind.

He said: ““I was desperately shocked when I heard of Alastair’s most untimely death.

"It seems like only the other day that it was my great honour to have Alasdair and Mandy to lunch in the House of Commons.

"He was incredibly hard working and a big friend to Tain. He did a very great deal for the town and the wider Easter Ross area. He will be a huge loss to us all. My heart goes out to Mandy and his family. I shall miss him."

Cllr Rhind, who was also a businessman - running a funeral directors in Tain’s Bank Street - was a prominent member of Highland Council. He sat on numerous committees, including the corporate resources committee, the economy and infrastructure committee and the housing and property committee.

He was also a member of the Black isle and Easter Ross area committee and the north planning applications committee.

Highland Council has been approached for comment.
