A HIGHLAND road remained closed on Friday morning while firefighters continued to tackle a wildfire, police have confirmed.

A section of the A832 was shut between Aultbea and Laide last night after the fire broke out at Laide Wood.

Three fire engines - from Aultbea, Ullapool and Torridon - were scrambled to the scene, and remained on site dousing the flames at 9.30am on Friday morning.

The fire comes amid an active ‘extreme’ level wildfire warning on the west coast and the Hebrides. Since the warning took effect on Thursday there have already been wildfires on Harris, Lewis, Barra, North Uist and Benbecula, as well as the blaze at Laide Wood in Wester Ross.

The public were last night being urged to "avoid the area” by police.
