Fyrish Gymnastics Club are embarking on a fundraising mission to give a group of young athletes an exciting opportunity to train at a specialist academy in Denmark.

Fyrish Gymnastics Club, based in Alness, currently has 500 members who travel from all over the North of Scotland each week to train at the club.

Sixteen young gymnasts who are part of the Fyrish Team Gym squad have been given a unique chance to train at the renowned Ollerup Gymnastics Academy this month.

Denmark has a rich teamgym culture with a long history of success in the sport. At Ollerup, the gymnasts from Fyrish will have access to top national coaches and the chance to enhance their skills, and experience new training techniques in state-of-the-art training facilities.

Team bonding is also an essential component of the trip as Teamgym is a gymnastics discipline that involves groups of athletes competing together in synchronised routines, involving a variety of skills such as flips, twists, jumps and dance moves.

Head coach Heidi Bavnhoej said: “Team Gym is a sport that revolves around teamwork and this trip to Denmark will not only be an amazing opportunity for the group to develop their gymnastics skills, but will also be a unique shared cultural experience, which will help foster friendships for life. The group consists of girls from ages 9 to 15, and the older girls really help the young ones develop. It is lovely to see them helping each other, and all grow in confidence to reach their full potential”.

Fyrish Youth and Junior section won the Team Gym Scottish Championship in 2019, 2022 and 2023, and they hope to repeat this success at the national competitions next year. Coach Heidi said: “The training opportunities provided at the Danish Training Camp will help the squad to develop strong team dynamics, and help contribute to their continued success in team competitions. We are a relatively small club in the North of Scotland, but we have a lot of amazing kids that work so hard each week and are committed to helping each other succeed”.

To help finance the trip, the Team Gym squad have been busy fundraising over the last few months, to make sure that every child in the team is able to participate in this amazing opportunity, regardless of their financial backgrounds. They have been reaching out to local businesses for sponsorship and organising events. You may have even seen them bag packing at local supermarkets.

Their next fundraising event is a family bingo night with music from DJ Bonny Smeaton, which is being held at the National Hotel in Dingwall on Saturday, November 11 at 7pm. It promises to be a fun night, and an opportunity for the community to come together and have fun while raising money for the club. Tickets are available at the door - £10 adult and £5 child.
