A DIGGER being used in the construction of a new path linking Strathpeffer and Dingwall has been damaged.

It's understood the damage to its window was caused between 6pm last night and 8am this morning.

The machine belongs to Highland Conservation which has been helping the Peffery Way Association with construction of part of the route in recent days.

The digger was parked near the works being carried out on the path between Fodderty and Dingwall.

It's understood that the police have been informed.

The Peffery Way Association told social media followers it was "absolutely gutted" to share the news. It said: "Such a huge disappointment that someone should do this when we’re turning ourselves inside out to deliver this community project for the benefit of us all. If anyone saw anything suspicious between the hours of 6pm last night and 8am this morning please pm us."

Many sympathetic to the group's aims shared their disgust over the issue. One wrote: "When\if the person(s) responsible are caught you should get them out there to do the job of the digger by hand, preferably with trowels then get them to pay for the replacement glass. Some folk need learning, utterly disgusting behaviour."

Another said: "You have been working so hard that is terrible news - hope somebody knows something."
