PARTICIPANTS from as far afield as Ukraine will be involved in a string of community concerts being staged in Ross-shire next week.

Free ceilidhs in Dingwall, Tain and Ullapool are planned as part of a traditional music week hosted by Fèis Rois.

The Dingwall-based arts organisation is holding three community ceilidhs as part of its annual music week for young people, led by some of traditional music’s finest musicians, singers and actors.

Ceilidh Trail set to take on Edinburgh Festival

The fun-filled week of Gaelic, music, song, drama and art, is taking place in the three locations across the Highlands, from April 1 – 4.

It gives young people the opportunity to try a new instrument such as fiddle, guitar, accordion, ukulele, tin whistle and Gaelic song, or the chance for more advanced players to work on their playing together and song-writing with a host of top traditional music and drama tutors.

As part of its long running partnership with a school in Ukraine, Fèis Rois is welcoming three young people from The Gergel Language School in Kyiv, accompanied by leader, Angela Gergel, to the music week. They will participate in workshops in Ullapool and attend the ceilidh in Dingwall.

The free community ceilidhs, which members of the public are warmly invited to attend, will give everyone the chance to listen to the tutors perform and enjoy an evening of ceilidh dancing. Community ceilidhs will take place on the following dates:

Tuesday, April 2, 7pm, The Duthac Centre, Tain. Performers to include Gaelic actor, Artair Donald, harp player and composer, Fraya Thomson, Carrie Forbes, singer, voiceover artist and music tutor, and Edderton fiddle player, Ruairidh Gollan.

Wednesday, April 3, 7pm, Ullapool Village Hall. Performers will include Fara keyboard player, Rory Matheson, Ullapool singer Kim Richards, multi-instrumentalist and producer Mike Vass and step-dancer, Sophie Stephenson.

Thursday, April 4, 7pm, National Hotel, Dingwall. Performing on the night will be accordionist Amy Henderson, singer-songwriter Tj Bawden, Peter Macpherson and Irene Fraser.

Christian Gamauf, creative producer, Fèis Rois, said: “Our community ceilidhs offer members of the public, and the young people attending our Easter Fèis, the opportunity to come along and hear some of traditional music’s finest Highland musicians, as well as a chance to have enjoy some dancing.

“We are delighted to be welcoming our friends from Ukraine once again this year and hope they will enjoy the week of traditional music, song and dance. We appreciate the support we get from the local communities where we hold our annual events and we look forward to welcoming everyone along to one of our ceilidhs next week.”
