THE tragic death of a Dingwall man closely associated with Ross County Football Club has been lamented.

Donnie Munro, who was 65, was pronounced dead at the scene following the fire which broke out in a house in St Andrew's Road at 7.49am last Thursday.

Ross County's newly appointed interim manager, Don Cowie, made mention of Mr Munro at his first press conference since being appointed to the role.

He said: “It is something we’re obviously greatly saddened by, having heard the news. We’re thinking of his family at this difficult time.”

The club later said it had been saddened by tragic death of Mr Munro, described as "a valued member of our ground staff".

A statement shared by the club said: "Donnie was born and bred in Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye and was always very proud of his upbringing on the island where he was a very talented footballer in his youth.

"He was a club member of staff and volunteer working with Davy and Brian tirelessly behind the scenes to get the stadium and facilities ready for match days.

"A cheerful character, Donnie, liked a laugh and always had time for a chat with everybody.

"He took pride in the club and all we have achieved over the years and will always have a special place in our thoughts."

It said he will be sorely missed by his family and friends, adding: "Our condolences go to his family and friends at this difficult time."

The Staggies will honour his passing by having a minute's applause prior to kick off against Livingston on Saturday, February 24.

Some took to the club's Facebook page to add their own tributes. Derek Miller posted: "Knew Donny from our days doing the tea bars, and recently when we were going to the games. Always enjoyed having a conversation with him, very knowledgeable on all aspects of football. Will be sorely missed. Deepest sympathy to all his family."

Jeanette Taylor added: "This is such sad news. His family, friends and all at Ross County who knew Donnie are very much in my thoughts."
