A HUSBAND who lost his wife to skin cancer marked a painful anniversary by honouring her memory.

David Anderson from Alness named June 20 – on which he would have marked his fifth wedding anniversary to his wife – Caroline’s Day.

Caroline Anderson sadly died last November after an 18-month battle with melanoma. She was 43 and had received care at Highland Hospice. David was keen to repay a debt of gratitude and challenged people to do something on that day to raise funds, realising more than £2400 in the process.

He said: “Although it was an emotional day, I was very humbled by the amount of people who took part and donated. It showed that even though we are all separate at this time, we can still raise money for a good cause. I’ve had many people ask if Caroline’s Day will happen again next year and I’m sure it will in some form.”

Caroline’s nephew Eddie (10) completed an impressive long-distance cycle challenge. He said: “It was difficult going out every day especially when it was raining and some days my legs really ached, but it was definitely worth it. Six hundred and 10 miles is such a long way but it felt great to get all the way.”

Eddie’s dad Richard said he was proud of his son for seeing it through over the course of the lockdown.

He said: “Highland Hospice provided wonderful support for our family when we needed it most, so it was really rewarding to be able to do something positive in Caroline’s memory.”

Many paid tribute on the online fundraiser for the hospice. Laura Oliver wrote: "Caroline was a lovely woman. She was kind, caring, always happy and smiling! I was lucky enough to have worked alongside Caroline in Asda."

Anne Wood wrote: "Walked 11k today and thought of the lovely girl I knew since the day she was born. A happier person you couldn’t meet and a lot of that was down to Dave. Thinking of you today."

Stella Talih wrote: "In memory of my sister-in-law, Caroline. With gratitude to the Highland Hospice for their care and dedication."
