A Black Isle volunteer has received a promotion for her work in the Army Cadets.

Sergeant Instructor Flora Thomson (60) volunteers with 1st Battalion The Highlanders’ Fortrose Detachment and has been promoted to Staff Sergeant Instructor.

During the group’s trip to the battlefields of Belgium and France, she encouraged cadets to research beforehand to see if their families had any links to the ceremonies so they could pay their respects.

Outside of her military training duties, Ms Thomson also helps with the pipe band activities of the Battalion.

She is on hand to support the band and supervise sessions so cadets can attend events country-wide.

The willing worker has also completed her Drum Major’s Course.

Locally, Ms Thomson is very involved in the community and during Remembrance week she collects alongside the Fortrose cadets for the Scottish Poppy Appeal, for which she has been a collector for 30 years.

To help mark the appeal’s 100th anniversary in 2021, Flora took part in the Poppy Pledge to help raise £1921 by cycling round the Black Isle – where she raised £4400 for the Poppy Appeal.

SSI Thomson received her new rank on Saturday morning during the start of the joint Inverness and Moray Company Training Weekend held at the Battalion’s Cadet Training Centre in Dingwall.
