Alness-based Fyrish gymnastics squad jet to Denmark for specialist coaching from top academy

Fyrish Gymnastics Club headed for Denmark for special elite coaching ahead of their ambitions to win national competition titles.

After completing a fundraising mission to make the trip possible, the group of young athletes were given the exciting opportunity to train at a specialist Danish academy.

Alness-based Fyrish Gymnastics Club currently has 500 members who travel from all over the Highlands each week to train.

Sixteen of these young gymnasts in the Fyrish Team Gym Squad seized the unique opportunity to travel to Denmark and train at the renowned Ollerup Gymnastics Academy, with state-of-the-art facilities.

Denmark has a rich team gym culture with a long history of success in the sport.

The squad were given training by top national Danish coaches, experienced new training techniques and – crucially – the essential component of team bonding during the trip.

As well as training at the Ollerup gym, young gymnasts also took the opportunity to visit Fyrish teamgym coach, Faith Macleod, who is being educated at Ollerup's International Gymnastics College.

Head coach Heidi Bavnhoej said: "It was a fantastic development trip to Denmark and we got coached by Danish national coaches and were staying in one of the best development facilities for teamgym, SG-Huset iF Svendborg.

"We also visit Fyrish teamgym coach Faith Macleod on Ollerup international gymnastics college, where she is taking her education from August 2023 to June 2024."

Fyrish Youth and Junior section won the Team Gym Scottish Championship in 2019, 2022 and 2023, and they hope to repeat this success at the national competitions next year.

To help finance the trip, the Team Gym squad were busy fundraising in 2023, to make sure that every child in the team is able to participate in this amazing opportunity, regardless of their financial backgrounds.
