Alness boxer Adian Williamson is in the process of turning professional.

The teenager, who trains at Inverness City Boxing Club under the tutelage of head coach Laurie Redfern, has had an accomplished amateur career so far and is one of three boxers at the club to have signed with Stevie Maguire in Glenrothes.

Last time Williamson competed before the pandemic cancelled all boxing events, he won a gold medal at an International Box Cup in Limassol, Cyprus.

He stopped Irish boxer Riley Brody after just 20 seconds of the semi final, before going on to claim the final on the judges’ scorecards against ex-English junior champion Andrew Lawson.

As far as coach Redfern is concerned, it is the right time for Williamson to take the next step, and the power he showed in that semi final in Cyprus should bode well for the youngster.

“Adian has fought at 54kg, and I haven’t seen many boys hit that hard at that weight – he’s had 20 bouts, and he has won 18 with 12 stoppages, so he’s quite a big hitter for a boy his age and weight,” Redfern explained.

“These boys are at the right stage to move on to the next level. They have served their apprenticeship.”

Williamson is still going through the medical certification process, but hopes to step into the ring as a professional for the first time in September.
