Cape Wrath Ultra runners reach half way point in torrential rain and strong winds on day four
The weather really bared its teeth on day four of the 2022 Cape Wrath Ultra, as the race reached its halfway point.
Torrential rain and strong winds faced runners in the Torridon hills.
Although it was a relatively short day, the weather and underfoot conditions were extremely challenging.
Of the 270 who started the event, only 190 were still in the race on day four and that had reduced to 167 by the end of the day.
Among them was Laura O’Driscoll, who battled on despite picking up an ankle injury on day three, and managed to retain her second place position in the women’s race.
Meanwhile, Graham Walton and Despina Berdeni both extended their leads.
Graham had started the day less than a minute ahead of Thomas Øderud and while the gap is now over 13 minutes, that could easily change over the second half of the race.
After day four of the 2022 Cape Wrath Ultra, the leading runners are:
Male
1st Graham Walton (25:53:55)
2nd Thomas Øderud (26:07:15)
3rd David Barry (26:43:42)
Female
1st Despina Berdeni (27:00:28) – fourth overall
2nd Laura O Driscoll (28:13:30)
3rd Vicky Savage (31:15:08)
Day five has begun, with 44km of distance and 1070m of ascent from Kinlochewe to Inverbroom. You can read more about today’s route at The Route — Cape Wrath Ultra®.
