Tom Stoltman makes good start in defence of World Strongest Man title

Tom Stoltman has made a good start in his defence of his World Strongest Man title which began on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old from Invergordon leads his Group One heat by 1.5 points after the first three events which took place at Myrtle Beach in North Carolina.

Stoltman, who is aiming to win his third consecutive World Strongest Man title, finished in second place in the loading race in 43.84 seconds.

He then finished in joint second place in the deadlift machine with six repetitions before winning in the log ladder with five reps in 41.50 seconds.

Stoltman has 15.5 points after three events and is 1.5 points ahead of Bobby Thomson of USA on 14 points and Pavlo Kordiyaka of Ukraine with 13 points.

Meanwhile his older brother Luke Stoltman is currently in third place in his Group Two heat with 12 points, four points behind group leader Oleksii Novikov from Ukraine on 16 points and Thomas Evans of USA on 14 points.

Luke (38) finished fourth in his heat in the loading race finishing in 63.78, third in the deadlift machine with five repetitions and second in the log ladder with five repetitions in 52.76 seconds.

The winner of each heat qualifies automatically for the final, with athletes finishing in second and third facing each other in a stone off to claim a place in the final.

Thursday will see athletes compete in Conan's Wheel and Kettlebell Toss in the final two events of each heat.

The final takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
