IN an intriguing all Ross-shire clash Tain golfers knocked out the cup holders, Fortrose and Rosemarkie, in the Northern Counties Cup competition at Peterhead by two holes to reach the quarterfinal stage of the oldest inter-club competition in Scotland.

The 116-year-old cup eventually ended up in Nairn though after a derby clash featuring Nairn and Nairn Dunbar — the former edging it after a tense extra 12 holes.

The Sutherland, Ross-shire and Inverness teams will have less of a journey to make next year when the event is staged over the Royal Dornoch course.
