THE annual Winter Stableford Competition at Tarbat signals the end of the gents winter golf season and the return to the season proper. Under match secretary Rob Punter’s excellent management, this year’s competition went down to the very last week. The final month saw the lead change hands with Chris Cunningham briefly overhauling the leading pair, but in the penultimate week Donald Hugh MacKay finally sneaked ahead of Mike Keay to win the competition. Chris Cunningham’s steady play earned him third place, and a late flurry from Harry Corbett earned him 4th place

The gents season got under way proper with the April Medal with Dane Sutherland carrying his late season form into the year proper. Dane returned an excellent 63, two strokes ahead of Richard Hart (65) who himself was two shots ahead of the "Two Donnies" – MacKay and Patience.

The Stroke Cup is played over two consecutive weekends and the first Saturday saw the ever-present D H MacKay (67) take a three shot lead into round two, ahead of Dane Sutherland and Hamish Skinner (70) with Mike Keay, Derek Wood and Richard Hart on 71s.

The second round saw Dane Sutherland’s excellent (66) for a winning total of 136, just enough to take the trophy with Hamish Skinner’s steady (138) good enough for second and Donald Hugh Mac Kay (139) in third place.

The following Saturday (24th) saw the playing of the Fallon Centenary Trophy donated by the late Jim Fallon, who sadly passed away last year – a true club stalwart for many years in various roles within the club, including captain, and a representative on the North Golf Region for many years. The competition was played in ideal conditions for this time of year – in sunshine and calm. It was one of the last men out on the day who triumphed – Jimmy Nimmons late charge (64) pipping the ever-present D H MacKay (65) with Harry Corbett (65) and Chris Cunningham (66) turning in decent scores on the day.

The May Medal went to the consistent Chris Cunningham returning a creditable net 65 on a difficult, cold, blustery, day. Three 67s followed that score, with James Gordon leading the pair of Richard Hart and Doug Stuart.
