Ross County manager Derek Adams has spoken for the first time about what he will be looking to add to his squad in the January transfer window.

The Staggies boss has closely watched how his players reacted to the first defeat of his third tenure in charge, away at St Mirren last weekend.

He has been impressed with the cohort in Dingwall so far, but that will not stop him looking to freshen up the squad when the window opens again in a couple of weeks' time.

Adams' County has been impressive with the ball at feet and more generally going forward to this point, but he believes the side could do with a bit more needle to get them through tight matches.

"I look at a group of players that are extremely good characters – from a work point of view, they have been excellent," he explained.

"They are nice boys, and we could probably do with a bit more devilment in the side, because you always need that in your squad.

"We will look to do something (in January). We've got players who could do it, I've seen that in training, and they are aggressive in their play.

"We have talked about (plans for the transfer window), but at this early stage I'm still assessing the squad.

"January is January, nothing will happen until we're into the month because we've got one game at the beginning of the month and then we've got the break.

"Our next game after the break is on the 20th in the Scottish Cup, but we will look to add to the squad, there's no doubt about that because we do need a bit of freshness. That's just the nature of the business."

Adams had previously spoken about wanting to keep players on short-term contracts to keep levels of hunger and desire as high as possible.

With the transfer window quickly approaching though, that also raises the prospect of losing players on free transfers when their contracts expire at the end of the season.

Of particular concern to Ross County fans may be Yan Dhanda, who has looked impressive under Adams, but the manager is not concerned about the prospect of losing good players for nothing.

"Losing players on a free doesn't worry me, I'm only looking to get the best out of them on every given Saturday," he added.

"If they walk out on a free, it's not going to worry me unless they are doing well. At this level, you don't find that a lot of players move on for transfer fees."
