Ross County have confirmed that defender Will Nightingale will stay at the club for the rest of the season.

The defender, on loan from Wimbledon, had initially only signed up until this month – raising the prospect of returning to his parent club once the transfer window opened.

However, the Staggies will keep hold of the 28-year-old defender, who had made 17 appearances so far this season.

"Will has been a mainstay in the centre of defence since his arrival, playing 17 games for the club in that time, and we are delighted to secure his services until the end of the season," a club statement read.

Nightingale himself had previously spoken of his desire to stay in Dingwall until the end of the season, commenting: "I love this club and the people behind the scenes from Roy (MacGregor) to the coaching staff and everyone else.

"I've loved my time here and the boys are brilliant, so I'm happy. I think leaving halfway through the season would feel like I'm doing half a job."
