ROSS Sutherland Rugby Club returned north from St Andrews with the U16 Caledonia Bowl after their first ever final appearance.

Yet they had found themselves trailing 10-3 after only eight minutes. Aberdeen Grammar opened the scoring on three minutes with a fine individual try from their winger who evaded several tackles on the run in from his own half. Three minutes later a fine penalty from Gabe Dobson in difficult windy conditions brought the score back to 5-3 but again Grammar’s winger was able to carve a path through the defence and score.

Spurred on by a very vocal 30-strong travelling support, Ross started to take control of the game and dominate the play. Dobson scored his second difficult penalty on 11 minutes and two minutes later Ross gained the lead. Solid play by the forwards set up good attacking ball for the backs and the Grammar defence were no match for the strong running of Ali Nixon. Dobson converted to take the score to 13-10.

The remainder of the first half was all Ross Sutherland. When Rowan Myers kicked on a loose ball, Logan Sinclair raced through to take advantage of hesitant defending to power over in the corner and on the stroke of half time Myers helped himself to a try to send Ross into the break 23-10 up.

Within six minutes of the restart, Dobson had scored a try of his own, but two minutes later Grammar struck back with a try and conversion to bring the score to 28-17. This was to be their only threat to the Ross defence in the second half. Ali Nixon grabbed his second try of the afternoon and the conversion gave Ross an unassailable lead with 11 minutes remaining. With the last kick of the ball Gabe Dobson slotted over his third penalty to bring the game to a close and his own points total to 18.
