SEAN Chalmers says finishing in second place at the Inverness Half Marathon was a massive confidence booster for him going into the rest of the 2024 season.

The Maryburgh athlete put in a good performance to claim runners-up spot on Sunday.

He was only 10 seconds behind race winner John Bell as Chalmers crossed the line in a time of one hour five minutes and 44 seconds.

Chalmers, who was crowned Inverness Half Marathon champion in 2022, pushed Bell for the majority of the race before the Inverclyde Athletics Club runner managed to push away in the final mile to claim victory.

Chalmers, who competes for Aberdeen Amateur Athletics Club after previously running for Inverness Harriers, says he wasn’t too disheartened by finishing second.

He said that he has got over illness which had hampered his form at the the start of the season.

He is now hoping to carry on his performance from the Inverness Half Marathon into the rest of the season.

He said: “It’s a bit of a confidence-booster to be honest, after a bad performance at the national cross country championships last month, when I had stomach problems.

“I’ll be racing against John again at the Tom Scott race, so that should be good.”

Chalmers added: “It’s also a huge bonus to have won the team title as that was something we had our eye on.

“We have a really good squad at the club now and looking further ahead, I am planning to do the Amsterdam Marathon in October.”
