St Duthus are still riding high at the top of the North Caledonian League after a 3-1 victory against Inverness Athletic at Grant Park.

Saints got off to a flyer with a Stefan MacRitchie goal but were pegged back with a freak own-goal.

The league leaders stepped up a gear after the break though, and secured the points.

“We actually started really well and scored an early goal and then hit the crossbar,” said Saints’ co-manager Stuart Ross.

“We then conceded a freak own-goal, but I thought the boys were very good in the second half.

“They been on a good run and they knew where they had gone wrong in the first half. They came out and got the job done and scored two goals. I have to be happy with that.”

Liam Rostock cut in from the right in the third minute and laid the ball off for MacRitchie, who scooped it over Athletic goalkeeper Sandy Stephen.

Saints’ skipper Cammy Mackintosh crashed a shot off the crossbar seconds later as the home side threatened to run riot, but in their first foray upfield in the sixth minute Athletic got back on level terms.

On-loan winger Dominick Edwards swung in a corner which ended up in the net off Saints’ defender Will Ross.

The rest of the half was pretty even with little in the way of clear cut chances.

But two goals in a seven-minute spell early in the second half turned the match Saints’ way. Ross got on the end of a free kick in the 55th minute to score in the right net, and Ben Bruce added a killer third.
