ROSS Sutherland Rugby Club put 17 tries past Shetland at the weekend to give them their best league start for a number of years.

The Stags made six enforced changes to the starting line-up, and with teenage flanker Cal Sangster missing from the team, it was left to another of last season’s U18s to show the talent coming through from the youth ranks. In at No 9 for the absent Dave Kennedy, Joe Eaglesham kicked things off after just five minutes when he picked up from the back of a scrum ten metres out and darted through the defence to score.

Shetland, who played with only 13 men for the whole match, could have taken the lead beforehand but squandered the penalty opportunity. By half time the Stags were 50-0 up, Eaglesham had his hat-trick, and the game was over as a contest.

It wound up 109-0.

Scorers: Tries – J Eaglesham (3), E Sinclair (2), L Sinclair, W Mackenzie, A Bridgeford (2), A Mackay (2), A Cook (3), G Braddick, J Reid, C Moorhouse. Cons - A Cook (12)

• THIS Saturday North Scotland Police are the visitors to Invergordon for the opening Caledonia Bowl fixture. KO is 3pm.

Three of the club’s youth sides travelled to Orkney last weekend in the latest round of the Caledonia Youth Conference. It was a disappointing day as the home side came out on top in all three fixtures.

This Sunday, Caithness bring their S1/2s and U16s to Invergordon. KO is 1pm.
