ROSS Sutherland responded well to recent defeats with a thumping victory over Aberdeen University at the weekend.

Hat-tricks from Mike Gordon and Ali Kennedy helped them to a 75-0 win against the side who have beaten them twice in Aberdeen this season.

Coach Alan McLean was understandably pleased with his team’s performance: "This was probably our strongest performance this season, and the kind I was expecting after we started 2015 so well.

"We were all disappointed with the way things went the last couple of weeks, especially the loss to Moray, but the lads responded well and played with a ruthlessness that was very much appreciated by our supporters."

There were braces too for Andrew Bridgeford and man-of-the-match Ruaridh Waugh, while Dave Gill, Gareth Braddick and Matt Thompson chipped in with one apiece. Kennedy slotted five conversions to give him 25 points on the day.

The Stags face a tough test this Saturday when unbeaten league leaders Aberdeenshire 2nds come visiting.

"’Shire have had a fantastic season and look certain to win the league," McLean added, "but we’ll be looking to compete in every area and on today’s form we’re more than capable of causing them an upset."

U15s progress in Caledonia Plate

ROSS Sutherland’s U15s progressed to the next round of the Caledonia Plate competition after a tough 10-26 away win at Orkney.

The Ross forwards put in a very strong performance to dominate their big opponents and establish a good attacking platform. The ever reliable Jake Henry (3 tries) and Lewis MacLeod (1 try) did the damage for the young Stags, while Fraser Mohun bagged three conversions, to take them into a 26-0 lead.

Orkney hit back with two tries in the last 10 minutes to make the final score 10-26. Man of the match was Edward Murray-John who had an outstanding game and typified the determined play of the forwards.

This Sunday the Ross youngsters travel to Gordonstoun in the next round of the competition, looking to avenge their league defeat at the same ground last November.
