Ross Sutherland captain Tom Bannerman hopes that an extra layer of professionalism will pay dividends away in Shetland this weekend.

The Stags make the journey out to the island for Caledonia North Two action, but rather than taking a ferry like many other clubs would they have decided to fly.

It will be a step up from the bus they are used to for away games, and the mode of transport coupled with playing relatively unusual opponents has generated plenty of excitement in the Invergordon outfit’s ranks.

“I think we’ve got a strong team, and we’re quite excited,” Bannerman, in his second year as skipper, said.

“We didn’t have Shetland last year, so it’s a good excuse for the boys to spend a whole day and night together, and hopefully they can get a win while they’re up there.

“We’re actually flying up instead of taking the ferry.

“There will be a buzz about that, an extra bit of professionalism to it.

“Boys might think they’re playing for Scotland on the flight, but we’ll be pretty excited which will hopefully give us a bit of an advantage. As long as we go up and earn the fun that we’ll hopefully have afterwards, that’s fine.”

Ross Sutherland kicked off their competitive season with a 40–10 win over Banff, with Bannerman hoping the display bodes well for the campaign ahead.

“It was exactly how we want to start the season,” he added.

“We played some really good rugby. There were times we got a bit lazy and started playing to their game, but we had a wee chat with ourselves and went back out to play the rugby we had been trying to play all the way through pre-season.

“It’s always hard, and one thing we’ve been practicing in pre-season is concentrating on our development and not being interested in how other teams want to play.

“It’s so easy to say, but we managed to do that.”
