TEAMS from three Ross-shire secondary schools were amongst those battling it out in the fast and furious game of rugby 7s over the past fortnight.

The annual inter-school tournament took place at Ross Sutherland Rugby Club with teams from Tain, Alness and Fortrose joined by a side from Dornoch to compete for the MF Marine shield in two different events.

Sevens is a fast and furious game played at pace and typically by athletic teams who are more at home on the track rather than a rugby pitch.

The event was held at Ross Sutherland’s ground, home to the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7s posts — a fitting location for a great set of games played by pupils from the S1 and S2 age group.

The MF Marine Shield final was contested between Tain and Dornoch Academies in a hard-fought match played at blistering speed. Dornoch’s stamina lasted longer, allowing their tries to mount up in the second half.

Finlay Foulis, a Ross Sutherland community coach, who is also from Dornoch, said afterwards: “What a brilliant game played by a great bunch of lads. I’m really pleased for the Dornoch team as its the first time they had played in the 7s tournament.”

The following week the teams competed for the MF Marine 10-a-side Shield – a game that involves playing rugby at speed but involving more players. The quality of the games was outstanding with great tactics and consistent performances showing stamina, strength and pace.

In the end it was a very close result with Fortrose just beating Dornoch by one point to lift the trophy again.

The club’s rugby and community development team have been working in many of the region’s primary and secondary schools and will be continuing with Rugby 7s as we enter the summer season. The team are currently sponsored by the Port of Cromarty Firth, who are keen to support rugby and sport in the community.
