MEMBERS of the Fortrose and Rosemarkie and Tain Golf Clubs will see their respective 2014 club championship competitions climax this weekend with Alan Cameron hoping to record a hat-trick of wins at Fortrose and Fraser Fotheringham defending the men’s title at Tain.

In tomorrow morning’s scratch semi-final ties at Fortrose, Alan Cameron, the holder, faces up to the club secretary, Michael MacDonald, and in the other semi-final, Chris Gaittens takes on Peter Cameron. The holder had an easy passage to the last four when in the quarter-finals he beat Kevin Fowler after twelve holes while Peter Cameron had to go an extra hole to overcome former champion Lewis Reid.

Robbie Mackay is already through to the final of the senior’s championship where he meets Lewis MacLeman and in the afternoon final of the lady’s championship Karen Johnstone plays Karen Mackay.

The quarter-final line up of the Tain championship on Wednesday night saw both the McAlpine brothers, Lyle and Corey in action. Lyle had the difficult task of meeting last year’s losing finalist, Munro Ferries, while younger brother Corey met the holder and first time winner last year, Nairn based Fraser Fotheringham. The two other ties on Wednesday night were Mike Keay v Frank Mackle and Ross MacKenzie v Billy Ferries.

Already through to the women’s scratch final is Anne Ryan after beating her sister Mary Smith in the semi-final. The other semi-final will be played tonight (Friday) and it features Sammy Fotheringham against Claire Ross.

ROYAL Dornoch’s Cara Thomson was the teams top points earner when the Northern Counties Women’s golf team playing in the Northern Area divisional finals at Pitlochry last weekend missed out for a second year of winning a place in the Scottish Area finals.

Northern Counties shared the points with Angus County on Day one then beat Aberdeen-shire on Sunday to go level on points with Angus before Monday’s deciding matches. But Angus took the title with a final day win over Aberdeen-shire while Northern Counties crumbled in the singles against the hosts, Perth & Kinross.

The foursomes were shared 1½ points each, Dornoch’s Cara Grubber and Buckpool’s Meg Sievwright winning, Tain’s Mary Smith and Dornoch’s Alison Bartlett losing and Nairn’s Sammy Fotheringham and Tain’s Anne Ryan earning a half point. In the singles only Thomson and Smith won their ties while getting beat were Seivwright, Ryan, Sammy Fotheringham and Dornoch’s Claire Riddell. Bartlett did not play in the final singles. This let Perth and Kinross win the match 5½ to 3½, and dropped Northern Counties to second place in the league table behind Angus County.

LOCAL member Steven Buchan matched par to win the Invergordon 18 hole Open competition last weekend.

Buchan’s 69 was one ahead of club mate Andrew Gilmour before the third scratch prize was won by Inverness visitor S Davidson.
